  • A beautiful hike starting from the En Beys refuge to discover the Etang du Lanoux and the Etang Faury, sublime waterholes on the border between 2 départements.

  • Access: start from the En Beys refuge
  • Guidebook with maps/step-by-step
(D/A) - Leave the refuge and walk along the En Beys pond. At the end of the pond, leave the Couillade d'En Beys sign and follow the GR 7, marked in red and white, towards Etang Faury. The path runs alongside and then crosses, via a wooden footbridge, the stream that links the étang de la Cascade to the étang d'en Beys.

2h00 - From the étang de la Cascade, the path climbs straight up into a scree where you choose the most obvious route, following the markings. The GR then follows the valley floor between scree and grassland, skirting and crossing the Etang Faury stream several times. At around 2197 m, you reach a small plateau where the stream meanders from basin to basin. After passing a narrow gap between two large boulders, the slope steepens on a short ascent to reach Etang Faury.

2h30 - From here, we follow the path that crosses the pond's spillway and climbs towards Porteille d'Orlu. After climbing up a sort of small corridor, you come to a signpost pointing towards the refuge des Bouillouses, Etang de Lanoux. The path descends a little, but soon rises again to reach Porteille d'Orlu at 2403 m altitude.

3h30 - The view opens up more and more to Carlit and Etang du Lanoux. For the descent to the Lanoux, it's important to follow the signs and not the herd paths, of which there are many in this area. The less well-marked path quickly descends over scree and grassland to the Etangs de Rouzet and then the Etang de Lanoux.

5h00 - At this point, we pick up the GR10. Heading west, we cross a stream before starting the ascent towards Coume d'Agnel. We skirt the Etang de Lanoset and then continue to climb until we reach an altitude of 2450 m, where we leave the GR 10 to follow the direction of the Refuge d'En Beys and return to the Etang Faury.

The path crosses over to the east to reach a small pass before descending to the signpost already seen on the outward journey. From here, we return to the refuge following the same route on the way down.
