Paris, 1928. Antoine Balestro, a fashionable young painter, has been unable to work since the death of his wife, and his gallery owner, Armand, despairs. One drunken night, Antoine tries to contact his wife through a clairvoyant. Without realizing it, he is actually talking to Suzanne, a modest fairground woman who has slipped into the caravan to steal food. Suzanne proves adept at imposture and, quickly assisted by Armand, performs one fake séance after another. Little by little, Antoine regains his inspiration, but things become more complicated for Suzanne as she slowly falls in love with the man she's manipulating...
