Guided tour of an old plasterworks in Surba
Guided tour of a former plaster factory in Surba
Selected by La Fondation du Patrimoine, discover this important site in the industrial history of the Tarasconnais.
At the foot of the Sédour massif, in the commune of Surba, lie the remains of a former plasterworks which, until 1957, exploited a vast gypsum deposit. The site includes buildings such as straight kilns unique in France, storage silos and mining galleries.
This heritage, unique in the Tarasconnais region, included 25 "plaster" factories spread over 10 communes in the 19th and 20th centuries. Unfortunately, only 3 remain today, in a very poor state of preservation.
The commune of Surba and the association Histoire et Patrimoine du Tarasconnais, led by the late Claude Builles, are working hard to save the site, and have come up with an exciting new project: once restored, the Surba factory will be able to host cultural events to help visitors discover the site. This new cultural hub will energize the area and enhance the value of the local industrial heritage.
To find out more, the Association Autour du Sédour is holding an exhibition at the Salle de fêtes d'Arignac (on the 1st floor) from 10am to 12pm and from 2pm to 4pm.
