Château d'Usson
Situated in the Donezan region, in Rouze (Ariège), Château d'Usson is a medieval fortress emblematic of the Cathar region.
Perched at an altitude of 920 metres on a rocky outcrop, it dominates the Aude and Bruyante valleys, offering exceptional panoramic views and an immersion in the tormented history of the region.
Perched on a spur at an altitude of 920 metres, and built between the 12th and 13th centuries, this Ariège castle, former residence of the lords of Cerdagne and Foix, occupied a strategic position, controlling the Aude valley and protecting the Donezan region from any incursion.
The Maison du Patrimoine is housed in the former stables at the entrance to the château. Here you can discover the long history of Usson and Donezan, from prehistory to the present day, thanks to permanent exhibitions, a slide show and relics from archaeological digs carried out on the castle. You can also see a reconstruction of a traditional mountain dwelling.
