  • This shady, refreshing family walk is a perfect symbol of the region's rich landscape. Discover several valleys, the Virgin's Rock at Ax les Thermes, and places where mountain dwellers passed through.

  • Access: Arriving in Ax-les-Thermes, follow the signs for the Ax 3 Domaines resort. 300 m further on, cross the Ariège in the direction of the town center and park in the marked parking lots near the gondola. The walk starts in front of the gondola footbridge (place St Jérôme).
  • Guidebook with maps/step-by-step
    (D/A) Ax-les-Thermes. Drive up the Oriège river along the Teich terms, Avenue Durandeau and then Rue du Cournilh, which joins the RN20. Cross this to take rue St-Udaut, which joins the steep Chemin d'Entresserres on the left. The road becomes a track that winds through the woods. After a watering hole, find the intersection with the GR107 at the Fournit barns.

    0:45 - Arrive at the Ascou barns. Follow the GR107 (red and white markings) to the right to reach the porteille d'Orgeix.

    1h30 - Orgeix. Cross the pretty stone bridge over the Oriège and follow the GRP (yellow and red markings) on the wide, flat path beside the river.

    2h00 - Route de Petches. Descend the road until you pass under the train bridge, then turn left along a path that leads to the RN20, which you cross (take care). To the left and then right, the signposted route climbs to the Rocher de la Vierge (with its fine view of Ax-les-Thermes) and ends at the bottom station of the gondola lift.

    2h30 - Return to the starting point.
