The pass and pastoralism: a long history!

Starting from the Pailhères visitor centre, a path lined with tall cairns built from stones gathered on site leads to the pass, opening up the landscape towards the Donezan. These cairns, built in the same style as those that once marked this route, feature information panels on the history of the pass and pastoralism: the livestock of the Ariège mountain pastures, the management of these pastures, and the forage value of mountain plants. The grass planting was carried out using seeds native to the Pyrenees, an experimental initiative conducted in collaboration with the Pyrenees Botanical Conservatory. Continuing towards Tarbésou, an interpretive trail (approximately 1½ hours) leads visitors to discover a peat bog and its rich and precious ecosystem. Along the way, further information boards highlight the remarkable ways in which plants adapt to survive in the mountains, as well as the edible and medicinal uses of mountain plants.
